MSU, Rome’s Pontifical University Antonianum lead conference focused on ethical development of AI

Provost and Executive Vice President David Shaw
Mississippi State University’s global leadership in innovation was in focus last week in Rome, Italy.
Officials from Mississippi’s leading research university joined colleagues at the Pontifical University Antonianum (PUA) March 10 to convene an international conference about the ethical use of artificial intelligence and the recently launched International Observatory for Integral Intelligence, Ethics and Public Value.
“Mississippi State is pleased to collaborate with the Pontifical University Antonianum in the realization of this Observatory for Integral Intelligence. Integral is a key word -- AI is not about computational efficiency, but rather the progress of humanity,” MSU Provost and Executive Vice President David Shaw said.
The Observatory is a partnership between MSU and PUA with other academic and research institutions that was created to lead human-centered digital transformation that combines innovation, responsibility and the protection of human dignity.
The conference focused on a commitment to responsible research, the ethical use of AI, and the development of the technology in order to foster progress through the development of appropriate policies.
Presenters included MSU’s Mimmo Parisi, a professor of sociology and senior advisor for European and Data Science Development, and Jonathan Barlow, associate director of the Data Science Program and an assistant teaching professor. “Today's conversation brings together participants from universities, industry, policy makers and government agencies to provide a rich environment for critical conversations about this transformative technology and its profound implications,” Shaw said.
MSU and PUA formalized their joint academic, research and cultural exchange partnership last June.
