Waggoner Engineering adds support for complex

As construction plans are being finalized for the new Civil and Environmental Engineering Complex at Mississippi State, a Jackson engineering firm is providing $100,000 for the project.

Founded in 1976, Waggoner Engineering Inc. offers innovative infrastructure solutions and leading-edge digital mapping technologies from offices in Mississippi and Louisiana. For more, visit www.waggonereng.com.

The company has a history of supporting the land-grant university's educational mission, including a 2005 endowment of the Waggoner Engineering Inc. Annual Scholarship for civil engineering majors.

"The support provided by Waggoner Engineering Inc. allows the department of civil and environmental engineering to continue building on a tradition of excellence in teaching and research," said department head Dennis Truax.

Truax said plans and preliminary design for the new complex were initiated in 2006 by the department's advisory board. When complete in 2016, the building will accommodate all of the department's educational, research and administrative operations--along with laboratory and classroom space for collaborative efforts across campus, he added.

The gift directly is funding construction and building enhancements. The high-technology Waggoner Engineering Inc. Classroom will be a key component.

"The proposed facility, and the Waggoner Classroom in particular, are necessary to the expansion and improvements planned for the overall educational experience of our students and faculty," said Truax, holder of the Bagley College of Engineering's James T. White Endowed Chair.

"Our civil and environmental programs increase in prestige and impact as we continue to educate future generations of engineers," Truax said. "These graduates go on to help meet society's needs and improve the quality of life around the world in sustainable, efficient and creative ways."

Civil and environmental engineering is among eight departments in the Bagley College of Engineering that currently offer a total of 10 Bachelor of Science degrees. The college also has 21 master's and doctoral degree programs.

U.S. News and World Report ranks the college's programs among the top 100 nationwide.
