Broderick joins Extension/MAFES in Crystal Springs

Shaun Broderick

A new horticulture research scientist joined the Mississippi State University Extension Service and Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station Oct. 1.

Shaun Broderick, a native of Orem, Utah, is an assistant horticulture professor and researcher specializing in herbaceous perennials, shrubs and trees. He is stationed at the Truck Crops Branch Experiment Station in Crystal Springs. Leisure gardeners and commercial producers can benefit from his research and outreach efforts.

“I will be setting up a research laboratory to develop an ornamental breeding program for low-maintenance plants that perform well in the South,” Broderick said. “I also will work to develop better growing techniques for ornamental plant material for homeowners and commercial growers.”

Broderick earned an associate degree from Utah Valley University. He completed a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in genetics and biotechnology from Brigham Young University. He conducted his master’s research on developing a Penstemon breeding program. He earned his doctorate in molecular genetics at Ohio State University.

While working as perennials specialist for seven years at Linden Nursery, one of Utah’s largest nurseries, Broderick wrote two sales guides with cultural information for all of the nursery’s trees, shrubs and perennials.

“I’m looking forward to working with Mississippi’s gardeners and industry professionals,” Broderick said.

Sherry Surrette, head of MSU’s Frank T. “Butch” Withers Jr. Central Mississippi Research and Extension Center, said Broderick’s knowledge and experience is a great asset.

“We are so pleased to have Dr. Broderick join the faculty at Truck Crops Branch Experiment Station,” Surrette said. “He has extensive knowledge in current ornamental plant breeding research practices and will use his expertise to provide improved plant materials for Mississippi’s commercial growers and homeowners.”
