MC Law dean visiting campus mid-week
Wendy B. Scott, dean of Mississippi College's School of Law, will be a special guest next week at Mississippi State University's United States Constitution Day program. Sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President and the Department of Political Science and Public Administration, the free, public event will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in the university's Leo W. Seal M-Club Center.

Distance Education's 'Lunch & Learn' Wednesday
The Center for Distance Education at Mississippi State University again will host its popular Lunch & Learn series this fall. The series opens this Wednesday with "MSU Distance Students: Looking at Online Programs from Their Perspective." There is no charge for the luncheon seminar, but RSVPs to mkt@distance.msstate.edu are required by Monday.

Wanted: cross-college research funding proposals
The Office of Research and Economic Development is again soliciting proposals from Mississippi State faculty who desire to create interdisciplinary, cross-college research groups on campus. These grants will be in the amount of $2,000 each and limited to a period of 12 months (renewable one time for a total of 24 months and $4,000). The grants are intended to facilitate interdisciplinary interaction between faculty and students that have a common research theme.

Symphony announces 2014-15 concert season
The Starkville-Mississippi State University Symphony Association's 2014-15 season begins Oct. 7 with a free 6 p.m. Big Band concert at the downtown Renasant Bank Plaza. Founded March 2, 1969 in the home of Starkville residents David and Barbara Cornell, the symphony association is a non-profit volunteer organization whose members work to educate, enlighten and share classical music.

Register today for CERT half-marathon, 5K
The Community Emergency Response Team at Mississippi State is hosting The Preparathon -- a half-marathon, 5K, half-mile family fun run and Emergency Preparedness Fair -- in mid-October. Proceeds from the races will benefit the Oktibbeha County Volunteer Fire Departments, OSERVS and the Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services.

Applications sought for teaching excellence awards
Mississippi State University faculty who are interested in submitting applications for the 2015 Grisham Master Teacher Award, the Alumni Association Early Career Teaching Excellence Award or the Alumni Association Graduate Teaching Excellence Award have until Oct. 13 to do so.
Mackie to lead national security sessions Monday
One of the nation's top counterespionage prosecutors will speak at Mississippi State next week. Will Mackie, a senior attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice's National Security Division, is scheduled to lead two program sessions during visit to the university on Monday. Open to all, the sessions will take place 2-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. in the Colvard Student Union's Bill Foster Ballroom/Section S.
Maroon & White Speaker Series this week
Mississippi State faculty members have another opportunity to learn how more classroom writing assignments may increase students' understanding and retention of course concepts. The university's classroom leaders are invited to the 2014 Maroon & Write Speaker Series at 2 p.m. Thursday in Mitchell Memorial Library's John Grisham Room. "The Effective Incorporation of Formal/Informal Writing" will be the topic of remarks by LSU's Warren Waggenspack and Warren Hull.
