ECE's Khan awarded IEEE Region 3 Outstanding Engineer Award

The Bagley College of Engineering’s Samee Khan, professor and head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been honored with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Region 3 Outstanding Engineer Award.

This esteemed accolade recognized Khan's outstanding contributions to the electrotechnology profession through exemplary technical and professional abilities.

“Receiving this prestigious recognition from IEEE R3 fills me with gratitude. It's a powerful reminder of why I work in this field and inspires me to continue shaping a technologically advanced future," Khan said. “I'm humbled to accept this IEEE award on behalf of my extraordinary team. Their unwavering commitment for the past sixteen years made this possible."

Throughout his career, Khan has published over 470 publications in books, archived journals, conference proceedings, book chapters, and technical reports. His work has primarily focused on computer systems: optimization, robustness, and security and has received over 24,400 citations. Two conference papers received the best paper award. One conference poster received a Silver Medal. One IEEE journal article received the best paper award; several were featured as spotlight papers. He has also served on several committees for IEEE and is the current associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing and the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing.

Jason Keith, dean of the Bagley College of Engineering, commended Khan on his achievements and contributions to the field of electrical engineering, specifically mentioning Khan’s development of software widely used in the industry.

“We are proud of Dr. Samee Khan for his contributions to IEEE in teaching, research and service. Most notably, he developed hardware and software energy-regulation methodologies for computer systems extensively utilized by industry and academia and developed one of the most widely used data center simulators (GreenCloud), all of which has led to 200 journal articles and nearly another 200 conference presentations, all while providing impeccable service to IEEE, other professional societies and the National Science Foundation” Keith said.

Region 3 of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers spans nine states in the southeastern United States and Jamaica, boasting over 24,000 IEEE members. The Outstanding Engineer Award is a prestigious recognition reserved for individuals who have made significant and impactful contributions to the field within this expansive region.

The electrical and computer engineering department head will receive the award at the Region 3 Awards Dinner, an integral part of the annual regional meeting, SoutheastCon 2024, on Saturday, 23 March 2024, in Atlanta, GA.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Mississippi State University consists of 27 faculty members (including seven endowed professors), seven professional staff, and over 700 undergraduate and graduate students, with approximately 100 being at the Ph.D. level.
