Phone scam targets Microsoft users on campus

A phone scam that has been circulating across the country has started showing up at Mississippi State.

The caller pretends to be a Microsoft engineer/support person and claims that they have received indications that someone is hacking your computer or that it is infected with malware. The scam artist then offers to verify if that is the case, and is often able to trick users into installing malicious remote control software, or purchasing a fake product purportedly to allow Microsoft to "clean" the machine.

This is a scam. Microsoft does not call customers offering such services. If you receive such a call just hang-up. Don't put your computer or yourself at risk.

If you have any questions about the legitimacy of such a call, please contact the MSU Information Technology Services help desk at 662-325-0631 or toll free at 888-398-6394.
