Call for papers: African American Studies 10th Anniversary Conference

The African American Studies Program at Mississippi State University is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2017. It will culminate the anniversary year with a Black Studies Education Conference Nov. 5-7. The plenary sessions will include student activists who pioneered the black studies education movement in the 1960s, including James Garrett, Jerry Varnado, Ed Whitfield, Vernon Smith, Bernard Stringer, Ramona Tascoe and others.

The program is seeking scholars to give papers and serve on panels for the conference. The Program Committee welcomes proposals on the theme of black studies in the 21st Century, as well as papers with a historical, social science, legal or economic perspective.

Henry “Hank” Thomas, one of the original Freedom Riders, and Earl Lewis, president of the Andrew Mellon Foundation, will give keynote addresses. The conference will also screen the new documentary, “Agents of Change,” with creator Amy Ginzberg.

Paper proposals (or abstracts) of 300-500 words will be accepted until July 1, 2017. Full panels are welcome, but will accept single submissions. Proposals may be submitted by email and in PDF format to ltownsend@aas.msstate.edu. Please include your contact information and affiliation. For more information call the African American Studies Program at (662) 325-0587.

The Conference Committee will review proposals by Aug. 1, and send notices of acceptance by email.
