Gautreau joins baseball staff as assistant coach
Just the second Mississippi State baseball coach to win 40 games in his first season on the job, Andy Cannizaro is adding to his coaching staff with the hiring of Jake Gautreau as an assistant coach. He will serve as the Diamond Dawgs' recruiting coordinator, along with assisting Cannizaro in instructing MSU's hitters. Most recently, he served as Certified Player Agent for the Boras Corporation, where he identified and evaluated talent and recruited premier amateur baseball players from across the country, along with helping them prepare for the MLB Amateur Draft.
Men's golf adds Ewing as assistant coach
New Mississippi State men's golf coach Dusty Smith rounded out his coaching staff with the addition of Charlie Ewing as assistant coach. Ewing, a Dallas, Texas native, was a four-year letterwinner at Vanderbilt under Smith from 2010-14. He was a four-year All-SEC Academic Honor Roll member off the course. Since graduation, Ewing spent the 2016 postseason as a volunteer assistant at his alma matter and this past season at Texas Tech, where the Red Raiders finished 14th in the final Golfstat Rankings.
American Farm Bureau tours research centers
Mississippi State University and the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation co-hosted leaders of the largest nonprofit farmers' organization in the U.S. last week. Zippy Duvall, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, and others with the Mississippi Farm Bureau met with agricultural producers and toured MSU research and Extension facilities across the state during their visit. "I greatly appreciated the opportunity to visit with Mr. Duvall, and I am pleased we had an opportunity to show him the variety of innovative agricultural research and outreach taking place at Mississippi State University," said MSU President Mark E. Keenum. “Farm Bureau is a champion for our producers and is one of their primary voices at the national level.”
Jackson visitors learn about unique offerings
John Marchetti of Jackson; John Lewis, Gertrude Ford Foundation member, Jackson; and Dr. John Damon, CEO of Canopy Children’s Solutions, Jackson, were on campus last week to learn about operations of the Mississippi State University Office of Student Support Services, T.K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability, and the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Clinic. They visited with staff members in those units and joined MSU President Mark E. Keenum for lunch in the president’s office in historic Lee Hall.
Center for Entrepreneurship and Outreach continues to grow, impact Mississippi
Mississippi State University’s Center for Entrepreneurship and Outreach has continued to grow since moving into a new 2,000-square-foot facility in 2016. As the Center for Entrepreneurship and Outreach continues to grow and pursue new opportunities, Director Eric Hill said the center fosters new businesses from student entrepreneurs from a wide variety of academic backgrounds, building on its VentureCatalyst program that has guided students through successful business launches.
Small chips, big impact: Horton studies heart disease, sickle cell anemia
A Mississippi State University researcher is developing new miniature models to better understand the factors that lead to heart disease and sickle cell anemia. Renita Horton, assistant professor of agricultural and biological engineering, is using clear polymer “chips” to create cellularized microtissue models, which she then uses to study the mechanisms that lead to cardiovascular related diseases. She hopes this work can aid in improving patient outcomes by identifying novel targets that can be exploited to mitigate some of the organ damage caused by sickle cell disease.
MSU Dining takes the cake in Aramark competition
A cake designed and created by MSU Dining staff has won an international Aramark competition. The carnival-themed cake, designed by State Fountain Bakery Lead Decorator Angel Jennings, recently won Aramark’s Employee Appreciation Day Cake Competition, beating Aramark teams from around the world. The six-layer cake invokes a carnival atmosphere, complete with tickets, popcorn and a top hat at the cake’s peak. The competition’s judges called it the “ringmaster of all cakes.”
Mississippi, Alabama research administrators coming to campus in July
The Society of Research Administrators International Alabama-Mississippi Chapter will hold its annual meeting at Mississippi State University this summer. With a theme of "Research United," the newly expanded chapter will meet on the Starkville campus on July 21, and registration is now open.
Variety defines upcoming MSU Lyceum Series
A nostalgic trip down Abbey Road will open Mississippi State’s 2017-18 Lyceum Series. The university’s long-running performing arts program launches Sept. 12 with a concert titled “Cellophane Flowers: A Beatles Tribute.” “MSU’s Performing Arts Committee worked very hard this year to bring a variety of productions that will enhance the cultural opportunities available to the MSU and Starkville communities,” said Stephen Cunetto, committee chair and associate dean of MSU Libraries.
