Pannell, RCU shine at national conference

Lance honored with inaugural award
Mississippi State University Director of Bands Elva Kaye Lance is being honored with the first Edythe McArthur Outstanding Director Award. Given by the Mississippi Bandmasters Association during its recent state clinic in Natchez, the honor is a memorial to the longtime state band director who died in 2009.

English announces Hargrove literary contests
A widely recognized former member of Mississippi State's English faculty is continuing her lifelong mission of service to the university. Nancy D. Hargrove of Starkville, a William L. Giles Professor Emerita, is funding a twice-yearly literary contest organized through the university's national literary journal, Jabberwock Review.

Music lovers of all kinds will find something to enjoy in the MSU Riley Center's 2012 Spring/Summer Performing Arts Series, which kicks off March 9. Healthy Starkville taking applications for grants
The Healthy Starkville Committee has announced details of $25,000 in cash grants that will be used by community organizations to promote healthy activities and lifestyles. "The purpose is to kick start healthy activities, programs and services in the greater Starkville area, including the Mississippi State campus," said Healthy Starkville chair Alyson Karges.

Human Resources Management at Mississippi State is sponsoring a Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) workshop on Feb. 29 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Bost Extension Center on the Starkville campus. The workshop is free for university employees, but pre-registration is required.

Recycling change: No more glass in bins, please
Mississippi State's single-stream recycling program has now been in place for more than a year. The program has fundamentally changed the way the university collects recyclables and trash on campus. However, due to a contractor change, MSU can no longer collect glass as part of the recycling stream.

Men's Basketball hosts LSU on Wednesday at 7 p.m. (SEC-TV), and travels to Gainesville on Saturday for a 12:30 p.m. game against Florida (SEC-TV)... Track and Field is in Birmingham Wednesday and Thursday for the UAB Invitational... Women's Basketball hosts Arkansas at 7 p.m. Thursday, and is on the road to Columbia on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game with South Carolina (SEC-TV)... Men's Tennis takes on Princeton on Saturday at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in College Station, Texas, and then either Purdue or Texas A&M on Sunday.
